Begin with a short gasshō meditation with your eyes closed.
When you feel Reiki flowing, place your hands, with palms still together, at the brow. Two variations exist: one with the fingertips pointed at the point between your eyebrows, and a second with the thumbs resting there instead.
As above, offer a prayer or statement of intent, such as “I ask that the consciousness of Reiki guide my hands on behalf of my client.” By stating your intent to only be shown areas in need of Reiki, “you will not be distracted by the energy of a chakra or an organ or anything else unless that area needs Reiki.”7
Using your most sensitive hand, or a combination of both hands, sweep slowly through the energy field of the client, beginning approximately one foot above his or her head. Move your hand(s) slowly and deliberately, noting any changes in the quality of the flow of Reiki. Wherever you feel byōsen, make a mental note. Remember that some of these energies may only be felt in the energy field of the client; it is okay to treat these areas above the body just as you would normally treat someone hands-on.
After scanning through the entire energy field at least once, locate the area with the most intense sensation of byōsen and treat that area first. Prioritizing higher levels of disharmony enables you to make the greatest amount of progress at the beginning of a session; some of the weaker byōsen that you feel are likely to stem from the stronger areas.
After a complete session, practice byōsen reikan hō in order to monitor the changes effected by Reiki.
